Founder Stories: KUBEBA

Let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there. How did your company get started and why?

I am allergic to peanuts and almonds. I live in Colorado, where I am always doing some sort of outside adventure, whether hiking, skiing, camping etc. I realized that there were no go protein bars for people who were allergic to nuts; they either had no protein, were super high in sugar, or just didn’t taste good. I reached out to my now business partners, saying I want to start a nut free protein bar company that’s low in sugar and manufactured in an allergy friendly facility. Amy and Emily have experience in the natural food space and have also suffered from food intolerances. Emily formulated the recipes without eggs, soy, gluten, or dairy based on her dietary preferences. We realized there was a whole world of people out there that cannot eat the top 8 food allergens for various reasons. We decided to change our focus on being a nut free company to a top 8 allergen free company.

What is your product and how would you describe it?

KUBEBA is a better for you, allergy friendly food company. Our first product to market is a line of protein bars that are are free from the top 8 food allergens, Certified Vegan/Kosher, low in sugar, high in protein, and manufactured in a dedicated allergy friendly facility.

How have you pivoted your business this year?

We launched in May 2020. We had to different find ways to interact with consumers since we couldn’t do in person sampling events.

What is your next challenge to overcome?

In 2021, we hope to have a smoother manufacturing process. We are also hoping to raise money for marketing and new production creation.

What do you predict for the food industry over the rest of the year?

Whether it’s due to allergies, intolerances, or dietary preferences, 1 in4 Americans do not purchase foods containing one or more of the top 9 food allergens. I believe the allergy friendly food market will continue to grow. I think the plant based market will continue to grow. I also think more people will buy speciality items online versus in brick and mortar stores.
