MEMBER STORY – PAT SCHNETTLER – 12 TIDES

Let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there. What is your product and how would you describe it?
Organic puffed seaweed chips – an umami-filled crunch for the earth-positive snacker

How did your company get started and why?
Spending several years in the traditional fishing and aquaculture industries, I saw many of the negative impacts of our food system on the oceans. So I went in search of foods that we could grow in the ocean that are as good for the ocean as they are for us. What I found was kelp grown on regenerative ocean farms that produce nutritious food with almost no inputs and have a positive impact on the health of the oceans. We started creating ocean-friendly foods from this kelp and sharing our story with the world.
Has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s never an easy path! We created a brand new product from scratch – dialing in the recipe and scaling the manufacturing has taken much longer than expected.

What is your next challenge to overcome? What help are you looking for?
Driving trial during the COVID era is challenging given the absence of traditional methods (e.g., in-store demos, live brand activation events). For a new product, we are looking for creative ways to facilitate this.

Tell us about a time that you received help from another entrepreneur or mentor, and how it helped your business?
Rusty Schwartz and the entire KitchenTown staff have been incredible supporters of us from day 1. They have provided valuable connections to experts in the industry and helped get our manufacturing off of the ground.
