Founder Stories: Cool Beans

Let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there. How did your company get started and why?

We started Cool Beans because after going vegan in 2017, I found it was very difficult to find whole food plant based prepared foods in grocery. There was a lot of vegan food but most was vegan junk food.

What is your product and how would you describe it?

Cool Beans frozen wraps are whole food plant based wraps. We combine simple ingredients vegetables, legumes and whole grains with powerful spices to create delicious food that is really good for you.

How have you pivoted your business this year?

Well we launched during Covid — so no! Many retailers put new product placements on hold during 2020. We were lucky get into about 650 doors including all of Sprouts and consumers have been very receptive to our unique offering.

What is your next challenge to overcome?

We need to build brand awareness and increase our door count across the US. Without demos, generating trial is tougher so we are launching a digital couponing program. We want as many people as possible to try us because about 90% of people that have tried our wraps have said they really like them. We have had to be very creative to build awareness since we cannot do in store demos. Social media, influencers and regional vegan groups have been a boon for us during this tough time.

What do you predict for the food industry over the rest of the year?

We have a number of our investors that are former entrepreneurs and food executes and that has been a huge blessing. We have a lot of experienced people around the table.
