Let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there. How did your company get started and why?
The idea of building Split Nutrition was started by a renowned Chef, Jeff Mahin, and a performance Nutritionist, Dr. Phil Goglia. Jeff had worked in restaurants for the better part of his life and always cared about taste, but it wasn’t until much later that he began to understand the nutritional aspect of what he was eating. He reached out to Dr. Goglia along his path to wellness. Phil’s philosophy was that at its core, Peanut Butter and Jelly is a health food when made with quality ingredients – a fruit and a nut, a fat and a sugar. We can get into the science behind it, but that may be for another time. Jeff is an avid cyclist and was looking for a way to get these nutrients while on the move. He wanted to purchase a PB&J in an on-the-go format and was surprised to find it didn’t exist. And that is how the concept of Split Nutrition was born! At that point, Jeff and Phil approached my partner (now Split CFO) Sabrina Valle and I to discuss manufacturing and jam supply with our company, The Jam Stand. Sabrina and I came on board as co-founders soon after – and the rest is history!
What is your product and how would you describe it?
Split Nutrition has created a better, more convenient way to enjoy PB&J. Split is the first-ever dual-sided PB&J in a patented, on the go pack. It’s a convenient combination of “better-for-you” meets delicious nostalgia. We use only quality, minimal ingredients (avoiding fillers, additives, and palm oil) to get back to basics with classic, PB&J goodness.
How have you pivoted your business this year?
2020 was definitely a whirlwind of a year. We had really only been on the market for 8 months when COVID hit the world by storm. We focused on hunkering down and becoming lean. We also got creative in how we reached customers, as a new brand, without being able to physically sample the product. This pushed us to look towards the future and the importance of an online presence in addition to traditional brick and mortar. All of this being said – we were still able to grow + 350% YOY. 2021 – we are coming for you!
What is your next challenge to overcome?
As we like to say internally, “We’ve now been on the market for over 2 years and it’s time to put on our big boy pants!” We are hitting 2021 running. Our goal for 2021 is for Split Nutrition to become a household name as a staple anyone has in their pantry, gym bag, backpack, desk drawer, and more for an easy, convenient snack that makes you feel good. We understand that this is no easy feat, but we are up for the challenge.
What do you predict for the food industry over the rest of the year?
So much is still unknown in the world right now – but one thing that is known is that people have to eat! But on a more serious note, I predict growth in the trend of online food delivery.
